Which way does transit run?
The compass bearing of every stretch of route in each Canadian city, weighted by length and coloured by route. A city on a grid draws a cross; one whose streets wind every which way draws a circle.
Each route counts once along its length, both directions together.

How it's measured
Each route's shapes from its agency's schedule are cut into 20 m stretches and binned by compass bearing in 10° slices. A stretch counts for its direction and the opposite one, so a north–south street fills N and S alike. A route's other direction and its variants along the same street count once, and a route listed once per schedule period is one route. A wedge's area, not its length, is its share.
Orientation order is Geoff Boeing's measure for street networks: 0 when routes run every way evenly, 1 for a perfect grid. A city needs 5 km of a mode to be ranked for it. Cities group agencies as the timelapse does, so Toronto includes GO, MiWay and York Region Transit. Intercity trains, coaches and ferries between cities are left out.
